What is Engineered Wood?

Engineered wood flooring is sold in various widths and lengths, made up of a hardwood surface (surface wear layer) glued onto a plywood base (core). Engineered hardwood flooring was developed for installation in areas with variable humidity levels for more stability than solid wood flooring.

Explaination of 3/4 inch Engineered Wood Flooring

Why engineered wood?

Engineered wood flooring has extensive residential and commercial applications. It may be glued directly, above or below grade, onto all substrates associated with solid wood flooring and additionally onto acoustic underlay and concrete subfloors and subfloors with radiant heating; it may also be stapled or nailed to a plywood subfloor.

What does quality engineered wood look like?

The quality of engineered wood flooring can be determined by four factors:

  1. The thickness of the surface wear layer: The surface wear layer should be at least 5/32-inch (4 mm) thick to offer the same re-sanding possibilities as solid wood.
  2. The number of plies within the plywood: For greater stability, the plywood should be at least five ply.
  3. The surface cutting procedures: The wood should be dry sawn rather than rotary peeled or slice cut since only dry sawn produces a high quality, natural-looking wood strip.
  4. The precision of the cut: A tongue and groove that joins perfectly on all four sides indicates high quality manufacturing.

Why Choose Countrywood?

Countrywood provides a superior engineered wood floor product with more stability and versatility than other solid or engineered wood flooring products and one that supports environmental sustainability.

From a technical point of view, we use reclaimed wood that has been reclaimed from old barns, buildings, factories and warehouses. This reclaimed old wood possesses superior characteristics to new growth wood and places no stress on the environment. We also offer salvaged wood products that have been found under water or under ground for several decades.

Our soft wood surface or wear layer is slightly over 1/4-inch thick (7 to 8 mm) and is secured onto a nine-layer, 1/2-inch thick (12 mm) core, both of which either meets or exceed industry standards. Our hardwood wear layer will be either a 5.5 mm on a 12mm core or a 4mm wear layer on a core of either 8, 12 or 15 mm.

If applied over radiant heat systems then we will only offer a 4mm wear layer, with your choice of core thickness.

Our design with tongue and groove (positioned on the core) allows for a precise easy fit and provides for more sanding than solid or other engineered wood floors. The core being undercut with grooves or scored are to allow for normal seasonal expansion, more flexibility during installation, and improved adhesion capabilities.

Our solid wear layer has been sawn & graded to achieve the highest quality Reclaimed Antique Engineered Wood Flooring, leading the wood flooring industry with flooring, superior to solid wood flooring environmentally, technically and visually.

Why does Countrywood choose reclaimed wood?

Countrywood is a proud advocate for a sustainable Green Environment through the more efficient application of our natural resources, predicated on reducing, recycling and reusing. Reclaimed wood has superior characteristics compared with new wood; it has a more stable constitution and a richer patina available only from aged woods.
